Complicated permissions for removal of a lakeside tree

Client

Commercial company with Ullswater offices

Background

A large conifer on the shore of Ullswater and close to the lakeside road needed to be dismantled and removed as there was significant decay at its base, making it unsafe. The project required a range of specialist contractors as well as close liaison with the client, the Lake District National Park Authority and the highways department of Cumbria County Council.

Our contracting and consultancy

This project posed a number of significant challenges, not only in terms of gaining planning and traffic management permissions but also in bringing together the range of skills and equipment required to complete the job safely and effectively. It turned out to be a multi-skill tree dismantle, involving rope access, lowering and rigging, as well as a crane removal and significant waste and timber extraction and recycling. In all, X different contractors were managed by Nicol Landscapes, including experienced ground staff and a number of certified and experienced climbing arborists.

Comment from Nicol: The Tree Specialist

This is probably one of the most complicated and sensitive tree removal projects that we’ve handled on the contracting side of the business. A bit of our “green tree thinking” combined with a really good network of specialist contractors meant that we could complete the work effectively and with a minimum of disruption.
